Gladewater Former Students' Association Holds Gala Valentine Party
Ninety-four former students and guests enjoyed a Valentine Party sponsored by the Gladewater Former Students' Association on Monday, February 11th, at the Former Students Building.
President John Paul Tallent honored the outgoing board members, Janetta Owens, Karel Wynn, Garth Cockerell, and Dr. Syntha West. Special recognition was given to outgoing president, Sherry Beall. Eight ladies and gentlemen were honored with valentine candy and roses to celebrate their 90th birthdays. These honorees were Ernestine Sawyer, June Gelvin, Dona Bozman, Mary Alice Allen, Jack Pettus, and Page Gay. Frances Waggoner and Helen Thomas could not attend the party, but were not forgotten. Leslie Rowe and Kate Phillips, seniors at GHS, entertained the group with a dance and a song. They received standing ovations.
The Not-So-Newlywed Game was played by contestants Jimmy and Mary Jane Williams, Royce and Syntha West, and Roy T. and Linda Van Houten. The questions and answers had the audience rolling in the aisles with laughter. Barbara Mackey and Wanda Allard received roses and valentine candy for their talent and work on the beautiful party decorations. Barbara led each table in singing a love song. Each table group had a different song to sing for the others.
All attendees received teddy bears, boxes of candy, and other goodies. The next event hosted by the GFSA will be on March 18th at 6 PM - a banquet honoring the GHS basketball teams of 1952 and 1963 (the only two teams to go to state playoffs). All former GHS students are invited for the dinner (no charge, but reservations are required by calling the GFSA office at 903-845-2631).
