GILMER–Some 12 area schools, including Gladewater, Union Grove, Big Sandy and Harmony, are scheduled to participate in the Special Olympics to be hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Gilmer here April 1.
The event is set for 9 a.m. on a Friday at Buckeye Stadium, located on the Gilmer High School campus on Bradford Street. Club President Bonnie Jordan said the public is “welcome to come watch and sit in the bleachers and cheer them (contestants) on.”
Some 220 athletes are signed up to compete as compared to only 170 last year, said Kiwanian Charlotte Carter. Schools participating other than the aforementioned include Gilmer, New Diana, Union Hill, Canton, Mabank, Shelbyville, Kilgore and Pine Tree.
Gilmer Kiwanian Ed Williams said the club is facilitating getting sponsors for the event in order to help pay for tee-shirts, medals and food. Those wanting to sponsor may contact Carter at 903-790-1311.
The Gilmer Kiwanis club also will host a fundraising golf tournament April 15 in the Longview area. Those interested in sponsoring or competing should call Kiwanian Dr. David Buller at 903-790-7394.
Bob Brewster, lieutenant governor of Division 34 of the Texas-Oklahoma District of Kiwanis International (and a member of the Hide-A-Way Lake Kiwanis club), is scheduled to discuss his career in the U.S. Air Force at the Gilmer Kiwanians’ luncheon Thursday. The Gilmer club meets at the First United Methodist Church at noon.
