Variety of non-credit courses offered this month in Kilgore

The Kilgore College Workforce Development – Continuing Education Department will offer a variety of courses and free course information sessions this month.

Classes and information sessions will be held in the Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center located at 220 North Henderson Blvd. in Kilgore. Seats are limited.

Upcoming Classes:

First Aid/CPR-American Heart Association:

1 day, 7 hours, $65

Beginning Date: Saturday, Aug. 20 (one day only)

Time: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This course is designed for individuals who are not healthcare providers or professional rescuers.  Instruction includes basic life support skills for adults and will satisfy childcare licensing requirements.

Substitute Teacher:

2 days, 7 hours, $65

Beginning Date: Monday, Aug. 22 (class held on Mondays/Tuesdays)

Time: 6 – 9:30 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: General topics for developing the necessary skills to become a successful substitute teacher or teacher’s aide will be presented.  Topics include classroom management, teaching strategies and skills, professionalism, special education, fill-in activities, safety and legal aspects.  During the course, you will be able to assemble your own “bag of tricks” to be used in the classroom.

Sign Language in the Workplace I:

16 weeks, 32 hours, $225

Beginning Date: Monday, Aug. 22 (class held on Mondays)

Time: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) communications for the work environment.  Topics include fingerspelling, numbers, core sign language vocabulary and simple grammatical patterns.  Emphasis will be placed on initializing workplace specific conversations in ASL.  This course is the first of four courses offered by the Workforce Development – Continuing Education department.

AutoCAD I, Computer Drafting:

8 weeks, 24 hours, $175

Beginning Date: Monday, Aug. 22 (class held on Mondays)

Time: 6-9 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This is an introductory course in the use of AutoCAD 2016 proceeding step by step through AutoCAD basics.  Some drawing knowledge or experience required.  Textbook and flash drive are required.  Class limit: 20.

Sign Language in the Workplace II:

16 weeks, 32 hours, $225

Beginning Date: Thursday, Aug. 25 (class held on Thursdays)

Time: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This course reviews and expands American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and usage of fingerspelling and numbers in the work environment.  Students will be able to demonstrate simple and everyday culturally appropriate communication with clients/co-workers who are deaf.  This course is the second of four courses offered by the Workforce Development Continuing Education department.

Dietetic Food Service Supervisor:

15 weeks, 120 hours, $675

Beginning Date: Wednesday, Aug. 31 (class held on Wednesdays/Thursdays)

Time: 5:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This course provides a solid management foundation for anyone interested in the food service industry.  The curriculum is approved by the American Dietetic Association.  Course study covers the organization and responsibilities of food service departments, industry laws and regulations, personal hygiene and sanitation, nutrition and diet therapy, menu planning, purchasing and storing of food, food preparations and service, as well as sanitation and housekeeping safety.  Upon successful completion of the course, students with two years of institutional food service management experience may apply under Pathway 3 to take the National Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) ANFP exam.  A reference manual will be prepared by the student from the handouts in class.  A binder will be provided.  Students should bring a notebook and pen or pencil.

 Business Leadership Skills Certificate Information Session:

 Date: Monday, Aug. 15

Time: 6 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About: This certificate will help individuals who want to advance into a supervisory position, who are new to management or who are seeking employment as managers and need to enhance personal skills.  Participants successfully completing all eight courses will receive a 144-hour Business Leadership Skills Certificate.

HR Specialist Certificate Information Session:

 Date: Tues., August 16, 2016

Time: 6 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

Classes in human resources can lead to an HR career or can enhance small business owners’ knowledge of employee management.  The HR Specialist Certificate can put job applicants a step ahead of the competition when applying for HR positions.  It can also save resources when employers and supervisors know the proper regulatory requirements for managing their workforce.

Industrial Skills Certificate Information Session: 

Date: Tues., Aug. 23

Time: 6 p.m.

Place: Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore

About:  Students will brush up on skills needed to qualify for an entry-level manufacturing job.  With a Kilgore College Skills Certificate most companies will welcome you to their workforce.  All three classes in the certificate can be completed in 12 weeks.  Be work-ready in only three months.
